This film made it in at number four in our Top Ten Asian Extreme (you can also read Jim's review of the film here), so we were initially pretty excited when we heard that the original Ring director Hideo Nakato had signed up to direct the American remake of the Pang Bros 2002 film.
However, alarm bells started ringing at the recent FrightFest event in London when a live satellite link-up with the Japanese director revealed that not all was perfect for him out in Hollywood and his Eye remake project (four writers and counting… doesn’t bode well).
It has also now been confirmed that Renee Zellweger is joining the cast for her first return to horror since her debut in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation.
Well, Naomi Watts proved with the US remake of The Ring that Oscar-worthy actors can carry a horror film (although Nakato's sequel wasn't as great as the first), so it may not be all bad news, as there's no doubt that Renee Zellweger can pull off a good performance or two (Jerry Maguire for instance).
Let's just hope this news makes Nakato a little bit more enthusiastic about his big-time shot at Hollywood horror.
