Green Day bringing American Idiot to the big screen
17th Nov 05
Apparently US punk rockers Green Day are in talks to turn their recent concept / protest album American Idiot (a best seller since it's release in October 2004) into a film.
Speaking to British indie radio station XFM recently, drummer Tre Cool informed the station that “We’re going to make a movie going along the story of American Idiot. [It's going to be] a rock opera. We need to go home, put some thought into it, talk to directors and writers and get the script together, stuff like that."
“I don’t think that I’m going to have to be in the film, because we’re making the movie and I wouldn’t do that to myself,” he added.
Singer Billie Joe Armstrong also has no intentions to star in the film himself - "I’m not an actor at all. I’d rather be behind the writing and the production, and leave the acting to the actors."
The album, a sideswipe at the current US Bush administration, follows three characters – Saint Jimmy, Whatsername and the Jesus of Suburbia – as they make their way through disenfranchised American society. Whether the film will actually be made or not, time will tell...
The last rock revlotionary concept album to make it to visuals was Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime, although admittedly that was more video footage of the Seattle rockers in action than a narrative of film.
1st Nov 04 Above all though, it is the relationship between John and Laura Baxter which is the film’s central focus throughout, and the gradual disintegration of their relationship amidst a haze of grief.
