Richard Kelly's Southland Tales hits DVD on March 31st

26th Mar 08

Richard Kelly's Southland Tales hits DVD on March 31st "This is the way the world ends, not with a whimper, but with a bang".

Well, if like us, you've waited for the DVD of Richard Kelly's Southland Tales before checking out what a wondrous mess it all is, then you haven't got long to wait now, as the DVD finally receives it's Region 2 release on March 31st, courtesy of Universal (rrp £19.99).

Now, we all know that Donnie Darko was one of the most audacious debuts in the past few years of genre filmmaking, and it goes without saying that all fans of that twisted tale will be curious to check out Kelly's second film.

The film features a very intriguing cast, including Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Geller, Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), and our favourite Blackadder actor, Miranda Richardson.

Decribed as a multi-layered story as Los Angeles stands on the brink of a disaster, Southland Tales has been labelled everything from "a mess" through to "masterpiece", which means that we at EMB are very keen to see it for ourselves.

So, what does it all mean? Here's Richard Kelly to offer a sort of explanation; "What is it all about in the end? I think it’s about where our country is going, our current dilemma when you’re talking about alternative fuel, terrorism, our civil liberties being taken away from us, and the potential effects of environmental degradation on human behaviour, neurological responses, global warming. You know, there’s a lot going on here.”

The DVD contains the full 145 minute feature as well as a 30 minute making of featurette called USIdent TV – Survielling the Southland.

Los Angeles, 2008: The city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. SOUTHLAND TALES is an epic story narrated by Iraq veteran Private Pilot Abilene (Justin Timberlake) and is set over the course of three days centered in Los Angeles that culminate in an apocalyptic 4th July climax.

Together with Abilene (Timberlake), the large ensemble cast of characters includes Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action star stricken with amnesia, Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.
